The Eye

hey! i know it’s been forever since i put out one of these things, but that should give you some idea of how busy i’ve been. i find it hard to believe that i produced, released, then toured behind three double CDs last year all while organizing ladyfest south. it was a great experience but i definitely found it hard to find time for myself. since then i’ve survived a sandstorm in texas AND, most recently, a tornado in indiana. uh, yeah. that was fun. wind shears, hail and blinding rain. i was very undignified about the whole situation. zen be damned. oh well.

as some of you already know, i took off a big chunk of time this summer. six weeks actually (which is unheard of). i’ve been on the road ten months out of the year for the past four years and i just decided that i needed a vacation. of course, being the virgo that i am, i’ve been using most of this time to catch up on work i couldn’t get done while on the road. i like to call it my "working buddha" mode. but, it’s over as of friday so I just want to take this time to thank everyone who humored me over the last month and half.

i am proud to say though that i did some exploring on my last tour out west. i got to see the grand canyon (got some great shots of me playing guitar at sunset right on lipan point), drove through the rockies, and i camped (gasp!) in san simeon on the california coast. i also had an eye opening confrontation with the queer as folk people at san fran pride (see my tour diary for the details).

also, my nephew is finally home from the middle east. i get to see him and my whole family later this month. gonna chill in trenton for a few days and catch up with everybody.

i hope you enjoy this issue. read on to find out what else i’ve been up to...

GENERAL NEWS

so, lessee...i guess the biggest news right now is that i’m featured on the cover of velvet park magazine with melissa ferrick, the butchies, erin mckeown, allison miller, and jill "i kissed a girl" sobule.

you can check out the photo at: www.velvetparkmagazine.com there’s a short q&a inside and another (very large) shot of me. i love the magazine and i hope they get lots of subscriptions (hint) as a result of this issue. you can go to any feminist or queer bookstore to get a copy or have them order it. The magazine also seems to be available at borders and barnes and noble as well. if you bring it to a show, i’ll sign it for ya’!

new cd coming?
don’t get too excited...yet. i’m trying not to talk about it too much, but i want to reassure all of you that i am indeed working on another disc to be released spring/summer 2004. i’m soliciting producers and auditioning musicians for this project. this is a new process for me so please bear with me. i’m ‘plotting’ out ‘Radio Doria II’ as well for election day 2004. i want to collaborate with other artists for that one so it’s going to take a little time to coordinate as well.

i’m also toying with the idea of releasing some MP3s on the website of "b-side" songs. did you now that i have close to 200 songs and only about 35-40 are on CD? some are so old now that i don’t think they’ll be showing up on disc. lemme know what you think.

new artist intro
- i’ve had the wonderful pleasure of performing with and discovering some awesome people this year. please check them out and support their endeavors:

Staceyann Chin (poet)
Ingrid Rivera (poet)
Mieka Pauley (singer/songwriter)
Cheryl Coward (self publishing author)
Hillary Goldberg (poet, filmmaker)
Nikky Finney (poet, educator)
Tracy Walker (singer/songwriter)

call to action - save amazon country!
this is the oldest women’s music and issues radio program in the country and was recently threatened with cancellation. looks like the station (wxpn 88.5fm in philly) is keeping it, but only on a bi-weekly basis and at a later, "adult" slot--11pm. they also relegated q’zine, a queer issues program, to the same time slot and airplay. their reasoning was to allow for more "family" programming on sundays. um, ok. please let the station know that this is unacceptable.

why is this important?
with all the changes regarding fcc deregulation and media control, we cannot afford to lose our feminist, queer, or otherwise diverse voices on INDEPENDENT and COLLEGE media outlets as well! this move sets a dangerous precedent. wxpn is a highly regarded station and is constantly setting industry standards. even if this station is not in your listening area, please go to the station’s website, www.wxpn.org, contact the general manager, and voice your support of these programs.

It will be monitored but unmoderated meaning pretty much anything goes. You can sign up directly here: doria_fanlist-subscribe.@yahoogroups.com. have fun! play nice…

WEBSITE NEWS

the website will be getting a facelift over the next few months. i’ll be adding and deleting some features to make it more interesting. in the meantime, keep checking for new pictures, links, lyrics for "alive& well" and "the love & the pain", news updates from me. as always, drop by the guestbook for questions and comments. fyi: just ignore the spammers. it’s our only defense. *sigh*

QUEERSTOCK

8 years and counting! we are in the process of arranging queerstock festival 2003 shows for the month of October all over the place and we need your help!

to set up a show, you’ll simply need to book a few artists (mix it up a little, stay diverse) and consign 20-50 cds to sell at the show. The money should then be donated to your local queer youth agency and a letter documenting the amount of the donation sent back to us. you will get full support from Queerstock on the official site (www.queerstock.org) and mailing list and we’ll supply the posters and press kits.

drop us a line at queerstock@yahoo.com. if you want to sign up on the announcement list send an e-mail to: queerstock-subscribe@yahoogroups.com

the queerstock cd has been officially out for six months and is getting great reviews. yay! if you haven’t picked it up, stop reading this and go get it now! remember that a portion of the proceeds go to queer youth advocacy programs around the country. we had a great time celebrating its official release at the National Advocacy Coalition’s Youth Summit in DC this past may. queerstock shows and the cd have raised more than $2,500 to date!
